Spain - Asturias

After Fuerteventura, Spain was the second location where I went surfing. I kind of got used to Fuerteventura, its waves, climate and the whole surfing experience, so I did not know what to expect somewhere else. However, Spain charmed me really fast even though Fuerteventura has a very special place in my heart.

Today, I would like to share with you my experience with the surfing location on the north – west of Spain – Asturias. Asturias is bordered by the Bay of Biscay (in Atlantic Ocean) on the north which provides long coastline with charming sandy beaches perfect for surfing.

Fun fact - what is unique about Asturias are not only its beaches but also Cantabrian mountains and this combination enables visitors and locals to enjoy not only beaches and surfing but at the same time winter sports like skiing or snowboarding. Quite cool, huh? :)

Asturia’s weather and climate are influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, so the summers are relatively cool (not very cold but not very hot either – it’s usually good to have some sweater during the day) and winters are mild with quite frequent rains. However, winters are the best for surfing - the waves are the best during this part of the year.

When it comes to waves, they are quite affable. On the first day in Asturias, I was surprised by the waves being used to hard to catch, messy, fast Fuerteventura waves, I was pleased by Asturia’s friendliness. The waves were nice, not too fast and regular (all of this was also given by the wind) which makes them easier to read, catch and enjoy the feeling.

Asturias offers plenty of surf spots whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced surfer. Everybody finds his/her spot. The two beaches I would recommend are Playa de La Espasa and Playa de Rodiles. Playa de La Espasa is a very friendly beach especially for the beginners. However, intermediates can catch some good waves for themselves too. The beach offers nice long whitewash and not very far in the ocean, there are great spots for intermediates. In case of Playa de Rodiles, I would recommend it for intermediate and advanced surfers.

It’s not only friendly surf spots and incredibly beautiful beaches that make this place charming. It’s also people, historical cities and food! It connects all of it together and makes it a perfect place to visit. So, don’t wait, go and catch your plane! Winter is coming so you know what it means - the best waves of the year!

Thank you for your time and remember the golden rule – always respect the locals? Spain is no exception :)
