Fuerteventura, the second largest of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean is an amazing place not only for a vacation. It is very special place for surfing. It was the very first place I was surfing at, and we are coming back there every year - it’s magical.
The name of the island - Fuerteventura in Spanish means “strong wind” which perfectly describes most of the days on the island. However, the weather in Fuerteventura is very friendly- around 18 degrees celsius in winter months during the day and around 23 degrees celsius in summer months (in daytime). Even though strong wind may make surfing conditions slightly harder, you can still catch amazing waves and if you catch one, trust me, it will be worth it.
Having slightly difficult conditions for surfing in Fuerteventura can be an advantage. Maybe you are asking yourselves “how can that be a positive thing”? But the thing is, if Fuerteventura is the place where you begin to learn how to surf, there is a very high chance that surfing almost anywhere else in the world will be much easier for you. That was my case too :)
Other advantage of this lovely island is its size. Even though it is the second largest of the Canary Islands, it is still quite small. Thus, you can always find a place for surfing because traveling through the island is easy and fast. Therefore, if conditions on one beach do not work for you, you can get in the car and find another one.
Important thing to mention are local surf spots. These beaches are for local people and it is important for tourists to respect this rule. Surfing community is very friendly, relaxed and based on respect towards each other.
There is plenty of surf schools with great surf coaches who will devote their time to you and teach you how to surf. We would definitely advise you to have surfing lessons especially if you are a beginner. However, it is always more safe to have a surf coach or advanced surfer to go with you into the ocean even if you have experience. It is important to know how to read the ocean and it takes a long time to learn it. Therefore we advise you to always be with a surf coach or group of advanced surfers.
If you are telling to yourselves that you will go to Fuerteventura this summer, I will only recommend it. It is magical any time of the year. But, when it comes to surfing, the worst conditions are during summer months and the best during winter. So, if you are eager to go there, the best waves are definitely during winter. On the other hand, you can always find a place in the summer, especially for beginners, it does not make that much of a difference.
The best beaches for beginners in Fuerteventura are Playa Blanca and El Cotillo. El Cotillo is suitable for the intermediate and advanced surfers too because they can paddle few meters into the ocean and catch the waves there, whereas beginners stay closer to the beach and stand up on the white wash. When it comes to intermediate and advanced beaches these are Punta Blanca (intermediate and advanced), The Bubble (advanced only!).
Fuerteventura is not only amazing place for surfing but it is full of kind and positive people, delicious food, marvelous beaches and hundreds of volcanoes.
Hope you'll enjoy some photos from our trips to Fuerteventura :)
